Thank You, Doug

Doug is a former DPE (Designated Pilot Examiner) and was once Shinji’s boss at Harvey Field — someone who shaped the pilot I am today.

After tonight’s presentation, I received a message from him that truly stopped me in my tracks:

“Shinji, this is Doug. I loved your presentation tonight, and you did a great job landing at that Russian airport. You did what you had to do. Sometimes, all the rules need to be thrown out to survive.”

Hearing these words from a mentor who once evaluated, challenged, and believed in me means more than I can easily put into words. Thank you, Doug, for coming by tonight — and for walking part of this long journey with me.

ダグは元DPE（指定操縦試験官）で、ハーヴィーフィールド時代、前田の上司で飛行教官としての基礎を形づくってくれた、大切な存在です。本日の講演後、彼から届いたメッセージに、思わず立ち止まりました。

「伸二、ダグだ。今夜のプレゼンテーション、本当に素晴らしかった。あのロシアの空港への着陸も見事だった。君はやるべきことをやった。時には、すべてのルールを一度脇に置かなければならない瞬間もある。なぜなら生きて帰って来なければ論外だからな。よくやった」

かつて評価し、厳しく指導し、それでも信じ続けてくれたメンターからのこの言葉は、何よりも大きな意味を持ちます。ダグ、今夜足を運んでくれて本当にありがとう。この長い旅路の一部を、共に歩いてくれたことに心から感謝します。
